LC has erected the majority of Northvolt’s facility for the production of vehicle batteries in Skellefteå, northern Sweden. The assignment, completed in 2022, included four buildings with a total area of approximately 110,000 square meters. LC’s task has been to construct a shell for the operations, including floor slabs, walls, and roofs. Additionally, we have been responsible for certain installations such as gates, loading bays, elevators, and cranes. A significant challenge was ensuring the delivery of the large volumes of building materials required. The ambition was to, as much as possible, use local suppliers and subcontractors. For instance, the majority of both steel and concrete were purchased from companies in the region, and many local subcontractors were contracted for the construction work.
The overall organization on the construction site grew rapidly from the beginning, involving both Northvolt’s own staff and all the companies that were involved. Approximately fifty nationalities were represented, and the project was entirely conducted in English. Due to the rapid technological advancements in battery technology, several changes were made regarding the equipment to be installed, deviating from the original plans. This, in turn, required us to adapt both work processes and what we were delivering to the new conditions. Thanks to our site organization’s significant flexibility and willingness to find constructive solutions, this could still be handled very effectively.
